With August just months away, everyone is excited for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the first time that the games will be held in South America. During the 17-day event, 10,500 athletes from 206 countries will participate in the Olympics. The event has been marred by various political controversies but the event is expected to draw in at least 7.5 million people.

The Rio Olympics will last for 17 days, starting on August 5 and ending August 21.
What events will take place in the Olympics?
42 sports will be played during the Olympics. In total, there are 306 medal events (136 women’s, 161 men’s, 9 mixed). Expect to see classics like gymnastics, volleyball, swimming, football and other new sports as well.
Where will these events take place?
According to the official website of Rio 2016, 32 competition venues will be staged in four different regions, namely Deodoro, Maracana, Barra, and Copacabana. Barra will host the most events (15). Maracana will host the Opening and Closing Ceremony as well as football matches. Meanwhile, Deodoro will host 9 events and Copacabana, 4.
How big is the Olympic Park and Stadium?
The Olympic park will be 185 acres and include the Olympic and Paralympic villages. The village boasts of 17,000 beds and 9,460 bedrooms.
The Olympic Stadium has a maximum capacity of 90,000 people — 10,000 more than the previous Stadium in London.
Which countries are predicted to get the most medals?
What will the Olympics be without predictions? United States is expected to rack the most medals, with China coming at a close second. But the Australian Olympic Committee says it other way around. Either way, these two countries will be competing neck-to-neck.

There are many faces to watch out in this year’s Olympics but most notable are veterans like Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, and Tom Daley. Phelps is trying for yet another around of Olympics. This is Bolt’s last Olympics where he will defend his titles in 100m, 200m, and 4x100m. Daley is set to make his second Olympics appearance and vie for a gold medal.

If you’re a golf or rugby fan, you’re in luck. This year, golf will return after 112 years of absence and rugby after 92 years.

The Paralympics will be held September 7 to 18. There will be 4,350 athletes, from 176 countries, competing in 528 medal events.
